How Does Listeria Contamination Happen?

September 26, 2024 Jeddy 0 Comments

Listeria, a dangerous bacterium, can survive in many places, like dirt, water, and animal poop. People can get sick from eating food that has Listeria contamination on it.

Here’s how food can get Listeria contamination:

  1. Fresh Veggies – Listeria lives in soil or manure used to help plants grow. If you grow food at home, you need to know where your fertilizer comes from.
  2. Unsafe Meat and Dairy – You can get Listeria from eating meat that’s not cooked enough, milk that’s not pasteurized, or cheese made from raw milk.
  3. Factory-Made Foods – Some foods like soft cheese hot dogs, and deli meats can get Listeria after they’re made. Even if the food starts clean, it can pick up Listeria from cutting boards, machines, or tools in delis.
  4. Problems During Shipping – If people don’t handle food right when they move it—maybe they don’t keep it cold enough or use dirty containers—Listeria can grow before the food gets to stores.

Who’s More Likely to Get Sick?

Anyone can get Listeria, but some people have a higher chance:

  • Pregnant Women– Listeria might not make pregnant women very sick, but it can hurt their unborn babies. It can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, or dangerous infections in newborns. Knowing these risks matters a lot.
  • People with Weak Immune Systems – This group includes:
    1. Older adults (65 years and above)
    2. People who have AIDS or other immune problems
    3. Those getting chemotherapy
    4. People with diabetes or kidney disease
    5. Those taking lots of corticosteroids (like prednisone)
    6. People on drugs to stop organ rejection or to treat rheumatoid arthritis

Knowing about these risks helps people to be careful and talk to a doctor when they need to.

Signs of Listeria Infection

These signs can look like other illnesses, so doctors need to do tests to know for sure.

Common signs include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Sore muscles
  • Feeling sick and having diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Stiff neck
  • Feeling confused or not as alert
  • Trouble keeping balance or having fits

These signs might show up as late as 30 days after eating contaminated food. If they don’t go away, see a doctor to get a blood test for Listeria.
